Star Wars: Dark Forces is one of the most influential games in the Star Wars universe, recognized as a shooter classic of the 90s, and was the starting point for the Jedi Knight series.
After 29 years since the release of the original Star Wars: Dark Forces, Nightdive Studios has released a remaster that improves the game to run on modern devices.
A little background
The original Star Wars: Dark Forces, released for DOS, Mac OS, and PlayStation, was a typical first-person shooter of those years and resembled the gameplay of DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D. However, Dark Forces stood out among them because it was one of the first projects of the genre, in which weapons had an alternative type of firing. The game also tried to give itself a realistic look, including story inserts that interrupted missions and added variety to the gameplay.
The game’s plot unfolds both before and after the events of the movie “Star Wars. Episode IV: A New Hope”. The main character is a former Imperial military cadet Kyle Katarn, who joins the rebels after the death of his father under unclear circumstances and the refusal of the leadership to give him leave for the funeral.
What’s being brought into the remaster?
Some of the features of the Dark Forces Remaster include:
- Nightdive’s proprietary engine, the KEX Engine, provides compatibility with modern devices in 4K and 120 fps.
- High-resolution textures and enhanced effects.
- Gamepad support – including vibration, gyroscope, and weapon selection wheel.
- A vault of previously unreleased development footage from the original Dark Forces, including a cut demo level.
Star Wars: Dark Forces in its modern guise also offers full gamepad support, where vibration, gyroscope, and weapon selection wheel work to their fullest potential to maximize player comfort and enjoyment.
Star Wars: Dark Forces Remastered Opinion
The remake of Star Wars: Dark Forces is well received by the public. Journalists call it a quality update, although the design and gameplay experience remained in the last century. The game is available on various platforms, having collected 84% positive reviews on Steam in the first phase.
Gamers note the atmosphere of the original and the improved graphics, but some feel that the gameplay is outdated.
The re-release of Star Wars: Dark Forces was released on PC, consoles of both generations, and Nintendo Switch. The cost is 30 dollars.
